I find myself in all kinds of crazy situations to be able to document great subjects. This time I was an AD (assistant director) on a video that Harmony was directing for Sebohdoh. This was shortly after Kids was filmed. I had my trusty Leica M6 and a few rolls of Tri-X. In between working I got some great images of everyone on the set. Chloe Sevigney was there as well as Larry Clark and Clarrisa Glucksman and her brother Sammy. This is a shot of Harmony playing around with his grandmother who did a cameo in the video.

So I Must be the worst photographer businessman I know. I get access to all these incredible people and I shoot them and then I forget about the pictures. So I shot Al Green a few years ago and it was a video shoot but I brought my Pentax 67 along and got him to pose for a roll. I mean this guy is a legend and I shoot it and forget about it until I hear Obama at the Apollo singing an Al Green song. Ok so here is a portion of the contact sheet I shot of Al Green. One day ill print a few and show the world or even better sell a few and buy a house.

City of Life and Death

It is seldom that I am physically moved by a film but when I am I like to tell everyone about it. City of Life and Death or Nánjīng! Nánjīng! is a Chinese film directed by Lu Chuan. It is about the Japanese Invasion of the formal capitol of Nanjing during WW2. There was some brutal raping and killing of the Chinese and this film shows it. This film is gorgeous but brutal in the same breath. This was made a few years ago and went thru a lot of scrutiny by the Chinese government to get finished. You don’t see many films about the Chinese vs Japanese during this time but there is another one of the same battle coming out soon directed by Zhang Yimou starring Christian Bale as a priest called “Flowers of War” which will be as graphic or more since its a bigger budget.

I directed a video for Brand Nubian's song "Punks jump up to get beat down". I used my favorite book "Subway" by Bruce Davidson as inspiration for some of the imagery.
I shot the video illegally on the New York Subway's for 2 days using a 35mm Aaton Camera package with HMI sunguns in duffle bags and NYU Film school sweat shirts with walkie talkies with headsets. I would never get away with that these days.

I shot a story for Huge Magazine(Japan) where I ran for 5 miles with the running club "Bridge Runners" I almost had a heart attack in the process running with camera batteries extra flash extra fat on my belly. It was latest in "The Friday Night Throwdown V" a series of down and dirty 4 round 1 minute fights of fairly good looking guys beating each other up. 10oz gloves and mouth pieces, cheap drinks, good music, loads of girls=A great night.

Dan Colen's new show opens today September 10th at the Gagosian gallery. He was nice enough to let me in to document the making of and get a few shots of him in his first major show. I was going to interview him but he was in the thick of it all but I will get that later when things wind down. It's like when you have a baby and everyone wants to talk to you about the baby but you just want to take care of the baby and goto sleep. Well Dan's show looks like its going to be a major success by the looks of it. There is so much going on in this space that it must be seen. Every since I started taking pictures Ive had the dilemma of what do with photos of the deceased. It’s weird becoming friends with someone I photographed and they die way before their time. Its a strange feeling that ill never be able to photograph them again and the most trivial pictures becomes so much more meaningful. It reminds me of War movies where the soldiers don’t want to get to know each other too well on the battlefield so it doesn’t hurt as much when one of them gets whacked. I was going thru my archives and thought I would share them with you. You might or might not recognize some of them but I will never forget them. Rest in peace my friends.

Free yourself from Cushioned Sneakers

After reading "Born to Run" I have been unable to run in traditional running shoes. The cushioning is too soft and my feet feel unstable. After a few months of training in Jika-Tabi(Japanese shoes worn by construction workers and climbers) my feet are stronger and my calves are sculpted. I no longer have pain in my shins or knees. I plan to get the Vibram 5 fingers that retail for $80 but for now Im running in the Jika-Tabi which cost around $40 at Tokyu-Hands which i have 2 pairs. Ill keep posting my progress especially after the Brooklyn Half Marathon.

Ever since I moved to lower Manhattan time and time again I was asked by friends if I had Yellow Fever or an Asian Fetish. I usually immediately say no because I have dated all types of women my whole life. Black, Brown, Beige, Yellow and White..you name it but what I can say is that I have a love affair with Asian people and culture in general. Maybe its because I grew up an only child in the South Bronx, NY with little to no father around and I did not feel so close to my Hispanic roots. I didn't spend much time with Spanish kids in fact I cant speak much Spanish. I dated Spanish women and when I would meet their families I didn't feel welcome in fact I felt the opposite I felt like an outsider.
They would give me shit for not speaking Spanish and asked if I was ashamed of being Puerto Rican. I wasn't ashamed I was just annoyed at these people for not accepting me for who I was. They were so judgemental and ignorant to anything new of foreign. So much for sticking with your own kind it was time to get out of the hood. In the Bronx I didn't see many Asian people and they were so foreign to me. I hung out with mostly Black kids and the only Asians were in the take out food spots and they didn't want to be my friend. We probably gave them a hard time if anything because they were behind a Plexiglas window serving bad Fried Chicken and Pork Fried Rice.

Around this time I was spending more time in Manhattan and I met an "Asian girl" Sue Kwon and we hit it off. She was of Korean decent but she was not like those other girls that only hang out their own kind. She was kind of the rebel of her family and to her own people. She hung out with all types and that mindset interested me . I felt relaxed and I could live with that. I learned about her families culture and i was amazed that it was all so new and fresh. I felt as if my friends I grew up with had no clue that a world existed outside the Bronx. Sue and I eventually had a baby boy and he is Kai. He is a Korican(Korean-Puerto Rican). A beautiful little boy(Bigger than me)who loves Bulgogi, Rice and Beans. He is a dream of what I wish I had when I grew up. He has roots in two cultures legitimately. He is the external of how I feel internal.
I started going to Japan about ten years ago with some NY artist friends and that's when I met my dear friend Kunici Nomura. He opened my Japanese world up and pulled me in it. He made me feel so comfortable that Japan became my second home. I was going to Japan more than I was going to Florida or L.A.. We met at an art show we stayed in touch and began working together on many projects. Kun had a worldly sense about him that I was facinated by. Taking a liking to me and opening me up to a lot of new experiences and the kindest of people that it made me feel part of something that I had never experienced in my life. I wanted to be part of the culture and get lost in it. I know I was a Puerto Rican kid from the Bronx but I felt welcome and it was like I had a second home in Japan. I would walk the streets and I could actually hear my thoughts. I couldn't do that in NY.
Where I'm going with this I don't know. All I know is that I don't take precedence with any type of ethnicity or color I just like nice people. I like people that are open to new ideas and adventures. It just happens that some of the nicest most interesting and creative people around me happen to be Asian.

Ive had trouble finding images in my archive lately and its made me miserable. The other day as i was going thru boxes apon boxes of old pics and I ran across a bunch of Polaroids from a few years ago. I had been looking for this particular Polaroid of Dash Snow and Jade Berreau for the longest and I found it. This was a special moment because Dash had just announced to me that Jade was pregnant and he was going to be a Dad. I took 2 portraits of them I kept one and gave them the other. Right before his death he had told me that he lost the Polaroid and wanted a copy of mine.

I decided to go out and take photos at 5am during the snow storm and I noticed a shadowy figure in the darkness was doing his thing. I noticed him one second and the next he was gone. A few days later I noticed what he finished what he started.
